Guide on a 30-hour motorbike tour from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh

Only 230 km away from Ho Chi Minh City, Cambodia’s capital city is an ideal place for your coming winter getaway. If you’re around in Ho Chi Minh, why don’t you try a motorbike tour from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh? A road trip is such a great way to explore the city on your own time without having to rush or worrying about the time.

What to pack in your carry-on baggage?

First, you need to book a room. The hotel prices in Phnom Penh are quite affordable so you might get more discounts if making a reservation beforehand. If you travel solo, choose a hostel or a hotel with bunk beds to share the cost. Generally, the price ranges from approximately 11 dollars.

We highly recommend a cute purple hotel named Zing, located in the corner of the Central Market. This shelter is convenient for getting around and going shopping.

Second, packing it up as light as possible. Don’t forget you’re going to a motorbike trip so bring along simple and light clothes including 2 sets of clothes, a shawl against the sun, elbow and knee pads, jackets, a helmet, and a personal hygiene kit (most hotels provide this item but bring yours if you want).

Have a thorough check on the vehicle. Before your departure, check on the brake, engine oil, tire, and inner tube. If it is possible, use tubeless tires to cut down on the risk of damage on the way.

Next, have your money prepared. If you have no time to go change the money, Don’t fret, aside from Riel – the currency of Cambodia, US dollars are popular, too. You can use both of the currencies for your payment.

The common expense for a 30-hour motorbike tour from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh is about 70 dollars. Most eateries around there mainly list dollar as the payment currency. And major gas stations have two screens showing two types of currency.

In the event that you use an iPhone, download the Offline map to have Phnom Penh map in your hand. With this app, you can view a map without the internet.

Itinerary for a motorbike tour from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh

Divide your trip into 2 journeys. The first one starts from Ho Chi Minh City to Moc Bai international border gate in Tay Ninh Province, which is 60km long. The border gate is also the starting point of the 170-kilometer journey to Phnom Penh.

Start your first full day at 9 a.m., taking An Suong bus station as the point of departure for your motorbike tour from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh. Go along the national route 22 to Tay Ninh Province and bear in your mind that the maximum speed you could take is 40 km/hour.

At about 10:30 a.m., you can settle down in an eatery for a bowl of rice spaghetti (cooked with shrimp, crab or meat) in Trang Bang District, Tay Ninh Province. A bowl of Vietnamese pork sausage and a cup of iced tea cost only over 1 dollar and even keep your belly full till the afternoon. Head to Go Dau Town, turn left and pass Go Dau Bridge then reach Ben Cau, Moc Bai.

Arriving at the Moc Bai international border gate at 11:30 a.m., you will get the transit procedures started. Thereafter, step into the Office of Immigration to make up a list of your information and the motorbike including chassis number, driving license. Paying for the transit fare is going to be the last step.

Hardly had you passed the border gate when taking a 100-meter ride to Bavet border gate in Cambodia. There, write down your declaration and the purpose of your visit to the country. After all, pay 1.3 dollars for a fee. You have got to declare fully information about your motorbike to protect it in the prevention of mishaps.

Once finishing the procedures, go straight to Phnom Penh. On both sides of the route stretches out immense rice fields. Keep going on for tens of kilometers, you will reach a small town or a village. Mind the speed limit signs or you will get fine from Cambodia traffic police.

Crossing over Tsubasa Bridge in Neak Loeung 60 km south-east of Phnom Penh, which is a three-span stay cable bridge crossing the Mekong River built 3 years ago.

Across the Monivong Bridge before entering downtown Phnom Penh. The bridge lies along National Highway 1, connecting the city to eastern Cambodia and Vietnam. It bridges the Bassac River near the end of National Highway 2 to southern Cambodia.

Preah Norodom and Preah Monivong are the 2 major boulevards in the capital city. Monivong Boulevard runs parallel to Norodom Boulevard at a distance of 800 meters, for most of its length. These 2 boulevards, however, eventually join at the traffic circle near the aforementioned Monivong Bridge in the southern section of the city.

What to eat, where to go, and what to buy

There is a lot more to explore in Phnom Penh with many must-visit destinations. Weaving your way through the city’s streets with your motorbike is such a great advantage. Take your time to visit the Silver Pagoda, Royal Palace, Naga World hotel and entertainment complex, or walk around the Independence Monument.

For a fun bit of shopping, Sorya Center Point is the best bet for you to shop and join for dinner. Also, be sure to check out its night market and the Russian Market (Toul Tom Pong) if you are looking for cheap souvenirs to bring back home or simply enjoy the nation’s specialties.

If the nightlife is your thing, have some downtime relaxing at Le Moon Terrace or Eclipse Sky Bar by the evening. Adjacent to Mekong River, Le Moon Terrace is crowded at the weekend so be sure you make a reservation in advance. For adrenaline junkies, make your way to Eclipse Sky Bar on the top of Phnom Penh Tower. The average price for a drink here is about 3 to 5 US dollars. Have a breath of fresh air, immerse yourself in the moonlight and live music while drinking some beers.

There is a range of street food stands providing breakfast, Cambodian, Thailand, and even Vietnamese cuisine.
